Cinema for children is not only entertainment, but also a means of developing cultural horizons, imagination and critical thinking. The Skalvijas Cinema Center is convinced of this, and together with the Vaizdų kultūros studija, they present a new educational book for children about cinema - "Džuljeta ir kino koukai". The author of the book is writer Jurga Vilė, the author of the illustrations is educator and artist Kornelija Žalpytė.
This book is a playful and informative story about a boy named Lukas's acquaintance with cinema, which begins in the oldest cinema in the city, where his grandmother Juliet, a cinema mechanic, works. Lukas unexpectedly meets film masks that become his companions in the history of cinema: from the Lumière brothers to the modern language of cinema, from the magic lantern to the backstage of a film studio. The book talks about cinema as an adventure that leads not only through the cinema hall, but also through thinking, emotions, and creativity.

"Juliet and the Filmmakers" stands out for being not only an educational work, but also a work based on a narrative form. It combines informative text, comic elements, creative suggestions and artistic aesthetics reminiscent of the visuality of a film. The content of the book organically fits into the educational process - it can become a tool for informal education both in the classroom and at home, and each of its pages encourages not only reading, but also action.
The emergence of the book is related to the long-standing experience of "Skalvija" in developing children's taste in cinema. Modern children grow up constantly stimulated by images - often fast, bright and commercial. However, for the world of cinema to unfold as an artistic, meaningful and engaging field, consistent introduction is necessary. This book is a response to the need to talk about cinema as a cultural phenomenon from an early age, to provide children with knowledge about the principles of its creation and to help them discover a slower, more meaningful viewing.

The creators say that the birth of the book was like a movie plot – with coincidences, unexpected encounters and a creative wave that drew them into the process. Although the book is not in black and white, its visuals are eloquent and atmospheric – the chosen color scheme, drawing technique and materiality are reminiscent of the lights, shadows and silence of a movie theater. The illustrations not only complement the text, but also tell stories themselves.
This is the first book of its kind in Lithuania, intended for children and about cinema – created to stimulate curiosity, form visual literacy and help the younger generation get to know cinema not only as entertainment, but also as art. The book is intended for everyone – children, parents, educators – everyone who believes that cinema can be not only a guide, but also a great companion.
