On Dry Herbs

The new film by the master of cinema, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, invites viewers to (re)familiar territory from his previous works - both in a direct, thematic and stylistic sense. In a remote village in Eastern Anatolia, Samets, an art teacher, has been working on assignment at a provincial school for four years. It doesn't take long to become clear that the friendly facade of the modern man hides a much more complex personality - what makes us human is gradually revealed. Not only that, Samet is accused of misbehaving with female students and gets involved in a love triangle with Nurai, an English teacher working in a neighboring town.

Alongside the political and social realities of Turkey, existential questions of alienation and human nature unfold. Masterful aesthetics - long shots, minimal camera movement are combined with deep dialogues, creating a unique synthesis of cinema and literature, which will allow the viewer to pause, concentrate and immerse himself in the magic of cinema. The film premiered at Cannes and Merve Dizdar, who played the teacher, was awarded as best actress.
