Last December 2nd, the world celebrated the 1977th anniversary of the birth of Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos. Born in New York to Greek immigrants, the girl became famous as Maria Kalogeropoulos. And although the singer known as "The Divine" has been with us for almost half a century (since XNUMX), she still remains one of the most enchanting voices and personalities in the history of opera.
In director Pablo Larraín's biopic, M. Kalas plays one of the most enchanting actresses of recent decades, Angelina Jolie. The director of the films "Jacqueline" and "Spencer" tells the opera singer's story in retrospect, looking from the perspective of Paris in the 1970s.
The film reveals the first steps of this great woman on stage, the dirty work, suffering, failures, the attraction of the stage, excitement and triumph. Maria, telling her story, relives her passion, pain, disappointments and love. She, as if from pieces, puts together the mosaic of her entire stormy, wonderful and tragic life.
Once, when asked what it means to be Maria Callas, the singer replied, "It's terrible. It's a constant effort to understand something that fundamentally is not and cannot be understood." Perhaps that is why she became "Divine."
