The Girl with the Needle

1918, Copenhagen. Karolina, a machinist at a uniform sewing factory, becomes pregnant, but instead of the better life she dreamed of, she remains lonely and jobless. With no other option, she takes a job as a wet nurse at a secret adoption agency where a sweet shop owner helps impoverished mothers give up their illegitimate children. Soon the girl learns the shocking truth about the fate of babies. The director continues Bergmann's tradition of gender tensions in a gothic thriller based on true events that left an indelible mark on Danish history. Presented so far in the "Directors' Fortnight" programs of Cannes, with only his fourth feature film, Magnus von Horn entered the competition program of this year's Cannes and received favorable attention from critics.
