Expelled from the Writers' Union of the Lithuanian SSR for his anti-Soviet literature, the talented poet Kostas is forced to cooperate with the Soviet security structures. He is sent to a small town to work as a teacher, his real task is to befriend the local guerrillas and betray their identities and whereabouts. Seeing the courage and determination of the partisans, but being increasingly pressured by the security forces, Kostas feels he is in an unsolvable dilemma: whether to listen to the voice of his heart or to betray the partisans and become a famous and valued writer of the nation.
