Early 18th century. Venice, Italy. Talented violinist Cecilia (Tecla Insolia) lives in a remote orphanage, the Ospedale della Pietà, famous for its exceptional female musical ensembles that attract patrons from all over Europe. Although her musical talent is extraordinary, her fate seems predictable - to marry a wealthy patron and forget all ambitions.
But one day, the orphanage hires ambitious composer Antonio Vivaldi (Michele Riondino) to become her musical mentor. Meeting him changes Cecilia's life forever - through his music, she finds the courage to escape her inevitable fate and nurture her God-given talent.
Based on the novel Stabat Mater by Italian novelist Tiziano Scarpa and the true life of A. Vivaldi – a Roman Catholic priest who taught at the Ospedale della Pietà asylum for almost 30 years – Primavera marks the big screen debut of director Damiano Michieletto, a world-renowned theatre director and opera composer. Michieletto also directed the opera Der Rosenkavalier, a work by Richard Strauss, which premiered at the LNOBT in 2021.
