Program: Crossing Europe
In the film by the interdisciplinary British artist Charlie Shackleton, fragments of feature films follow one after the other, selected according to the sole criterion - none of the actors are still alive. The dead, briefly revived in the tape, resemble angels or ghosts, and the traces of their work speak of the transience of existence. The fragility of time goes beyond the boundaries of the cinema screen - there is only one 35 millimeter copy of this film in existence, so each exposure naturally contributes to the film's wear and tear and eventual decay. Currently, the film has been screened almost sixty times at film festivals and museums around the world.
Living and working in London Charlie Shackleton is a non-fiction filmmaker and artist. Previously wrote film criticism for The Guardian and Sight & Sound magazines. His short subway films "The Marks That Remained", "The Fish Story", "The Personal Truth" and "The Copier" have been presented at international festivals. in 2023 he created a 10 hour and 7 minute film of a drying brick wall in one shot. After submitting the film to the British Board of Censorship, he ordered the body to review the entire film in protest against length-based fees for films. After the Light premiered in 2021. At the London Film Festival, the film is still traveling around the world.
