In their youth, close friends Ingrida and Marta (actresses Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton), who worked together in a chic New York magazine, have long since parted ways. But many years later, terminally ill Marta finds Ingrid and asks her for an unusual favor: to be by her side when Marta decides to finally end her suffering. Although shocked by such a request, Ingrida cannot answer her friend and they leave together to a secluded house, from which Marta is determined not to leave again.
