VIDEO MASK IN ROMUVO: Godzilla -1

Original language: Japanese

Godzilla Minus One

The film will be presented by Rolandas Maskoliūnas, author of "Videokaukas", fantasy enthusiast, doctor of biological sciences.

In post-World War II Japan, while the ruins are still being cleared from the bombings, a giant monster – Godzilla – emerges from the depths of the Pacific Ocean. The film “Godzilla -1” centers on former kamikaze Koichi Shikishima, who is haunted by the guilt of his unfulfilled duty and the country’s lost honor. Returning to the destroyed Tokyo, he tries to start a new life, but the appearance of Godzilla turns the city into another battlefield. People who have lost everything are forced to unite and fight not only for survival, but also for a new hope, when the land is terrorized by a force that surpasses the power of any human weapon.

Director Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla -1 returns to the original 1954 Godzilla idea - the monster here is not only a symbol of horror, but also a metaphor for the legacy of nuclear disaster. The work examines Japan's moral decline after the war, the trauma and the people's efforts to regain dignity and self-confidence. The realistic visual style and emotional narrative distinguish the film from many previous Godzilla adaptations, giving it historical and psychological weight. It is not just a monster movie, but also a sensitive reflection on guilt, repentance and humanity's relationship with the horrors of its own creation.

“Videokaukas at Romuva” is the continuation of a science fiction film cycle that first appeared on television a few decades ago, now reborn in a new format — on the big screen. As in the legendary TV show, audiences of “Videokaukas at Romuva” will be welcomed by Rolandas Maskoliūnas. The introductions before each screening will explore science fiction as a thought experiment: how this genre reflects reality, why it matters, and how it evolves. And how it helps not only philosophers to grasp the essence and value of humanity.
