After its international premiere at the Warsaw Film Festival, Karolis Kaupinis' latest film "The Hungry House" continues its journey - it has been selected for the Baltic Film Competition Program of the Tallinn Film Festival "Black Nights". The film will be released in Lithuanian cinemas at the end of January next year.
"The Hungry House" is receiving attention from the most important film festivals in our region – we take this as a very significant assessment. Tallinn and Warsaw are not only "A" class festivals, but also places where the strongest voices of the Baltic States meet. It is important for us that Lithuanian cinema becomes part of this conversation – visible, appreciated and inspiring," says the film and M-Films producer Marija Razgutė.
According to K. Kaupinis, the relevance of the film has recently increased even more. "The Baltic countries experience the Russian threat and internal dangers to their democracies in the same way. The feeling of helplessness and the desire to somehow free themselves from it is also the same. There are many similarities in our societies, we understand each other well, so Estonians or Latvians can view the film as close to themselves," - director K. Kaupinis notes.
The Tallinn Film Festival will take place from November 7 to 23. 11 films will compete in the Baltic film competition program, including other Lithuanian works - "Guest" (dir. V. Katkus), "Activist" (dir. R. Zabarauskas), "Wall" (dir. I. Jonynas), "Renovation" (dir. G. Urbonaitė).
About human closeness and the determination to dream
"The Hungry Cabin" is already collecting its first reviews. The European film magazine "Cineuropa" writes that the film focuses on people's personal lives, so intimate conversations in a mobile home are more important than political speeches.
The film tells the story of television announcer Daiva (Ineta Stasiulytė), who one day loses her job along with hundreds of colleagues. An energetic and persistent woman is determined to do everything for television. Having declared a hunger strike, she and her colleagues settle in a trailer near the television building. The film about the hunger for human closeness, the determination to dream and desperately pursue one's goal stars I. Stasiulytė, Arvydas Dapšys, Paulius Pinigis, Algirdas Dainavičius, Albinas Kėleris, Eglė Mikulionytė.
"The Hungry House" is the second feature film by K. Kaupinis. The director's debut feature film "Nova Lituania" was awarded six "Silver Cranes" and toured numerous international festivals. Two statuettes of the National Film Awards went to K. Kaupinis' short film "Triukšmadarys".
The film's production was partially funded by the Lithuanian Film Centre, Eurimages, the Czech Film Institute, the Latvian Film Centre, Creative Europe, and Lithuanian Radio and Television.
