The first cow

Original language: English

First cow

"A bird builds a nest, a spider builds a web,
and man friendship.” – William Blake, Proverbs of Hell

This is a sensitively told story of friendship from the inhospitable XNUMXth century. early Oregon lands. Otis, a taciturn loner and gifted cook, has endured a journey west with fur hunters. King-Liu, a fortune-seeking immigrant from China, is on the run from his pursuers who accuse him of murder. After an unexpected meeting, they feel a sincere mutual connection and soon start a successful but dangerous cookie business, which is only possible with the secret participation of a rich landowner's cow.

"Like a sound that rings louder in the silence, in the darkness of Kelly Reichardt's film, which conveys the physical and moral viscosity of the creation of capitalist America, the friendship of two people who happened to be fellow travelers shines. The film subtly asks why, in a country where all immigrants and settlers are equal, it doesn't take long to find a hierarchy? The only antidote is attentiveness to the other, because the other is a person's home." (Aistė Račaitytė)
